For me, the best way to define “social justice” is to describe the high school I attend, Social Justice High School. Social Justice High School represents unity and equality. It is also a high school where everyone sticks together as a whole despite his or her beliefs, race, religion, skin color etc. Social Justice High School is where no one is judged or criticized. Everyone is free to be themselves and would be accepted for their individuality. Before I came to Social Justice I wasn’t used to being around any other race, I was just used to African Americans. I didn’t even want to get to know any other race, I thought things wouldn’t work out because of the different ethnic groups I was around, it was a challenge I didn’t want to face. I eventually came to an conclusion to not judge anyone before getting to know them, because of this I found out that we are all the same and pretty much face the same stereotypes, we have so many things in common, we just have different skin colors.
Even though we have many things in common and have unified both races. Latinos and African Americans still have to face stereotypes and challenges everyday. We still have to face the problems outside of school such as racism, gang fights, etc. We are still forced to be segregated because both communities racially are divided which can cause us to have no relations outside of school if we let society racism effect us. Separation by skin color perpetrated through the media why society forces us to believe that one ethnic group is better then the other. However, in reality we were all took advantage of by upper class men of another race, whites. We were all portrayed as a disgrace to society. Despite of how different one ethnic group think they are from the other, both ethnic groups faces the same obstacles everyday, which are include being stereotyped, judged, criticized, and segregated. I never knew that I would get along with other races because of what I thought about them or what they thought about me, but I came to the conclusion that they were all just thoughts that I had learned from society. Learning Latino history is what made me understand and realized that we are the same we’re just different colors and we face the same obstacles in everyday life.
We try to represent unity but we are forced to think were different because of the stereotypes we face everyday. We work together on big projects to help understand and get to know each other better, to know the struggles we face as individuals in our own communities. Eventually, Social Justice would help both ethnic groups remember how and why we became close and the struggles we face while trying represent unity.
I struggle everyday with trying to get along with a different ethnic group despite of the different stereotypes we face and have to challenge to become a whole. The media helps society judge both ethnic groups with the negative effects and strong power it holds against us. As a whole we must face these struggles and challenges like we been doing the last four years I’ve been here. I will always carry with me the background, challenges, and commitment, into my future because of the help and support have from the role models in my life from Social Justice. I would continue to build a strong relationship with another ethnic group with no fears or worries by working with them in the near future and not judge them.
